Frequently Asked Questions About Play Therapy
What age group is play therapy for?
Play therapy is most effective for children between the ages of 3 and 12. However, teenagers and even adults can benefit from play-based therapeutic approaches. If you are uncertain whether your child’s age is appropriate, please contact Sulene — she is happy to have an initial conversation about your specific situation before you book.
How many sessions will my child need?
This varies considerably from child to child. Some children make significant, lasting progress within 8 to 12 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term support over several months. Sulene reviews progress regularly and discusses this openly with parents. There is no rigid programme — the process is always tailored to your child.
How much does play therapy cost?
Sulene’s fees reflect her training, experience, and the specialised nature of play therapy. Please contact Sulene directly for current session fees and information about any available concessions.
Is play therapy covered by medical aid?
Medical aid coverage for play therapy varies significantly between schemes and plans. Sulene recommends contacting your medical aid provider directly and asking specifically about benefits for “play therapy” or “child counselling.” Sulene can provide the necessary invoices and documentation to support any claim submissions.
What Do I attend sessions with my child? in the very first appointment?
No — children attend sessions without their parents present. This is an important part of the therapeutic process: children need a space that belongs entirely to them, where they can express themselves freely without managing a parent’s response. You are, however, kept fully informed through regular parent feedback sessions.
What happens at the very first appointment?
The first appointment is a 60-minute parent consultation — your child does not attend. This is a structured conversation where Sulene learns about your child and family, and you have the opportunity to ask questions and get a sense of whether the approach feels right for your family. There is no obligation to proceed after this session.
How do I talk to my child about going to therapy?
Keep it simple and positive. Something like: “You’re going to meet someone who helps children with their feelings. Her room is full of toys and things to play with, and you get to play the whole time.” Avoid lengthy explanations or using words like ‘therapist’ or ‘problems’ if your child is likely to find these unsettling. Sulene will provide personalised guidance at your parent consultation.
What if my child refuses to go?
Some children are initially resistant — particularly anxious children. Sulene is experienced in working with reluctant children and can offer guidance to parents on how to handle this. In most cases, once a child experiences the warmth and play-based nature of the sessions, resistance dissolves quickly. Sulene will never force a child to engage before they are ready.
Is everything my child says in sessions confidential?
Yes — the content of play therapy sessions is confidential. Sulene does not share the specific details of what your child plays or says with parents, as this confidentiality is essential to the therapeutic relationship. The exception is where Sulene has a concern about the safety of your child or another person — in which case she is professionally and legally obligated to act, and will communicate this to you clearly.
Can play therapy help my child with ADHD or autism?
Play therapy can be a valuable support for children with ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, or other neurodevelopmental differences — particularly in the areas of emotional regulation, social skills, anxiety, and self-confidence. Sulene recommends an initial consultation to discuss whether her approach is the right fit for your child’s specific profile and needs.
Can we do sessions online?
Sulene’s primary practice is in-person in Hermanus. Families who are unable to travel to Hermanus are welcome to enquire about online options — please contact Sulene directly to discuss what may be possible for your situation.
